Jewellery is an intricate part of feminine beauty. Its history is many centuries old. Jewellery making started 5000 years ago evolving from shells, animal teeth, and other objects used in prehistoric times to gold, silver, gems, stones and pearls in modern times. Egypt, Italy, China and, South and Central America were the places of its origin. During Renaissance, jewellery making had attained the status of a fine art. By 1930 industrialization had brought jewellery within the reach of the middle class.

Jewellery has also played an important role in the worlds history, many powerful kingdoms were conquered for the greed of acquiring the precious yellow metal and other jeweled objects. In 1840, Gold Rush gave way to mass migration of 250,000 people into an area, where the worlds super power, United States of America stands today.

Another interesting story that emerged in the late 19th century, is the renowned Austrian company Swarovski.

Daniel Swarovski founded this company with the aim to cut crystals automatically. The company was an enormous success and soon worked in numerous fields related to production of abrasive and grinding tools, optical products and manufacturing of decorative crystals. Its necklaces, pins and earrings are popular worldwide.

According to poet John Keats, A thing of beauty is joy forever. Beauty attracts human like a magnetic field. And, invariable jewellery has aided both women and men to win the hearts of their beloved and precious ones since ages.

The purpose of modern jewellery remains unchanged, however, it has never been as diverse as it is in the present day.

The advent of new materials like plastics, harvested pearls and artificial gemstones has grasped the budgeted pockets of a larger segment of the population. Among early 21st century developments, several jewellers have experimented with edible jewellery - necklaces made of bread and silver rings encrusted with crystalized sugar.

When Napolean came to the throne in 1804 he revived jewellery. Greek and Roman architecture being the inspiration for his jewellery style.He had gems re-set in latest neo-classical style which were widely copied in Europe.

Usage of a pendant is age old story, its origin dates back to 8th century BC in ancient civilizations of theTuscan region. They made large necklaces, bracelets and earrings embellished with granulated textured gold work. Necklaces were manufactured of cloth and metal, often attached to a pendant which was made of wood, shell and gems.

In French, a pendant is defined as a hanging object attached to a necklace and serves it purpose as an ornament, piece of jewellery, symbols of identification, symbol of protection (amulets), and self-affirmation symbols (initials on a chain, hanging from the neck).

The concept of pendants is largely used in other areas of art and craft. Pendant lamps is one such example, where a cluster of lamps can be hung from the ceiling. These lamps are constructed from terracotta or metal and decorated magnificently. The Romans had a number of words defining these portable pieces that made after-dark activities possible. The word Lantern is derived from the Italian word Lanterna.

Pendant vaulting was the solution for suspending sculpted ornaments or fans in architecture. Strong transverse arches were made to span an area, and these in turn supported the elongated keystones. Panel vaults sprang from these pendants upon which pieces of ornate decorations could be fixed.

Along with a little more skin, necklaces began to make an appearance. Renaissance gave birth to Tudor Necklace with a choker and a pendant accompanied with a longer necklace which disappeared into the bodice. These necklaces were strung in pearl, gold, semi-precious stones and enamelled gems. Both men and women wore them. It became a symbol of status when a law was passed, permitting its exhibit only by a noble or a rich man, while prohibiting its usage across the commoners.

During Classical Greek Period most necklaces were three dimensional pendants. Acorns, seeds or heads were suspended from a row of flat elements which resembled a rosette.

Birthstone jewellery is a favourite among the gifts for occasions. Birthstone charm pendant are flexible enough to be moved around or can be worn together or in different strings and necklaces. The other parts of the world were not left unaffected. With Arab conquest of Iran, the Islamic community was introduced to pendants and other pieces of jewellery. The animal art impertinent to Iranian traditions persisted, however the pendants were modified in strict constraint to Islamic teachings which forbade the making of images.

A 12th century gold pendant in the form of lion is a fine example of the traditions and religion blend.

Magatama is a Japanese depiction of jade pendants shaped like a comma with a small perforation at the thick end. Magatama was worn to gain protection of good spirits and upon embarking on a quest to find new life to their homeland.
