Boston Contact Lenses

Boston Contact Lenses- A Style Statement For Your Eye:

What is a Contact Lens

A contact lens is a corrective, cosmetic or therapeutic lens usually placed over the cornea of the eye. They serve the same purpose as that of the conventional glasses but are light weight and practically invisible. This gives them a special edge over the bulky spectacles which many people find a hindrance in their day to day activities.

Contact lenses are one of the most accurate ways of correcting refractive errors of the eye. They are very popular because they are less affected by wet weather, do not steam up and provide a wider field of vision. They also increase the general attractive appearance of an individual. All these qualities make the contacts undoubtedly the preferred choice of millions all over the globe.

Need for Contact Lenses:

Contact lenses are generally used for two purposes. Some use it as an alternative to the traditional glasses and the fashion conscious tribes go for colored contact lenses. Whether it is worn to enhance your beauty or to just get rid of your spectacles, lenses have a huge market.

Lenses are worn to correct refractive errors such as myopia (near sightedness), hyperopia (far sightedness), astigmatism and presbyopia. When the difference between the power of the left and the right eye is more than four diopters (eye power is measured in diopters), there are chances of experiencing double imaging while using eye glasses. When the eye power is very high the spectacles would be very thick resulting in reduced field of vision. Contact lenses are recommended in both the above stated cases as allow for correct focusing of light onto the retina.

Types of Lenses:

There are basically two types of contact lenses - soft contact lenses and rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. Both these lenses correct myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. However, over 85 percent of contact lens wearers prefer soft lenses as these are initially more comfortable and are more eyes friendly in comparison to RGP lenses.

What are they made of

The very first contact lenses were made of glass. They could not be used for extended wear as they caused pain and irritation in the eye. Later, lenses were made from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA or Plexiglas). These are more commonly termed as hard lenses. They were definitely much more convenient than their predecessors. However PMMA lenses could not transmit oxygen to the cornea which was a serious cause of various eye problems.

The 1970s and 80s saw the development of improved raw materials which were oxygen permeable. These were called rigid gas permeable lenses. RGP lens is able to replace the natural shape of the cornea with a new refracting surface which means that a regular rigid contact lens can provide a good level of vision in people who have astigmatism or help people with distorted corneal shapes.

A soft polymer plastic material is used in the manufacture of soft lens combined with a certain percentage of water. The use of water allows the oxygen to permeate the lens and thus helps in increasing the comfort level of the lens.

In recent years, the use of silicone hydrogels for lenses has become popular. Silicone hydrogels have both the high oxygen permeability of silicone and the comfort and clinical performance of the conventional hydrogels. These lenses are recommended for extended users of contact lenses.

How do contact lenses work

Contact lenses are generally made from a gel like plastic which contains 38% to 79% water which makes the lenses soft and comfortable. The lens basically rests on the cornea of the eye and is held in place by the eyelids pressure or by adhering to the tear film that covers the front of the eye.

The lens functions as the initial optical element of the eye when in place on the cornea. The optics of the contact lens combined with the optics of the eye work in tandem to properly focus the light on the retina thus resulting in clear vision. It helps in reducing the image distortion caused by spectacles and provides excellent peripheral vision without blocking the eyes to look at the sides.
